The June issue of the Journal of language Language, and Hearing Research includes an investigation of "How Adolescents Comprehend Unfamiliar Proverbs: The character of Top-Down and Bottom-Up Processes" through Marilyn A. Nippold, Melissa M Allen, and Dixon I. Kirsch, of the University of Oregon.

Studies have shown that adages are more difficult to comprehend than other models of figurative language--metaphors, similes, and idioms, for example--with a certain quantity of being more difficult than others.
