Kathy Urschel, a 35-year-old deaf-blind tandem cyclist, rode onward to compete in her next to the first Paralympics during the 2000 games in Sydney upon Oct. 18-29, an issue which set records for participation and media coverage. A 1998 recipient of a National Communication Award from the National Council upon Communicative Disorders, Urschel lost her sight at the age of 21 and became deaf seven years later. She then received a cochlear implant.
